I'm trying to install the software (and subsequently the drivers) for my Officejet Pro L7680 on my HP DV6500, running Vista Business. The installation does not complete and I receive a "fatal error." I need to install the drivers as well as the software so that I can actually use the various functions of the printer. The extent of the fatal error:

Now Launching=X:\hpzwrp01.exe -m dpinstxml_vista -| XXX -f
X:\hpwins05.dat -Validate No dat -Validate No
= Application did not return ERROR_SUCCESS. Returned 0x643
Exit code=1603

Any ideas?

I've tried everything, from connecting using a USB cable instead of the network, to installing just the drivers, to disconnecting from the network, to chatting with HP tech support for over 2 hours. Could really use some help.

Hi,

Is that a 64-bit Vista or just 32-bit?

Try these steps:

1. Perform System restore:
If the printer software was previously installed on the computer anytime before or even if the original issue was anything else before this error, then try restoring the computer to the date on which the software was working. You can then do add a device from the installation screen. The printer would start working fine as the software would already be available after doing a system restore.

*** To perform a System Restore, start your computer in SAFE MODE, restart your computer then continuously hit F8 at the very first screen
then select SAFE MODE. Then a dialogue box will appear, click on "NO" and the System Restore window will pop up. ***

2. Uninstall the complete Software.
Perform L1, L2, and L3 uninstall. Then reinstall the s/w.
3. Insert the CD & start the install, select custom install.
Under options select only "HP Drivers (required)" in order to install only the print/scan/fax drivers. If drivers will be successfully installed, you can add one by one the HP software starting again the installation and selecting Install More Software button & install the software in this order:

•HP Solution Center
•HP Device Functions
•OCR Software

*** Do NOT install HP Participation Program or HP Customer Experience or HP Supply. ***

4. Grant full permission to the system
Right click on My Computer/Computer, go to properties\security\Group or user names\ select the customer’s user name & click on permissions. Click to select the Full Control check box under Allow, and then click Advanced. Check both the boxes under advanced window. Click OK & close all the windows & restart the PC. Install the software by following customer install method.

5. Make sure that you have write access rights enabled for the following registry keys:

•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2\
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Print Processors\
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers.

In order to provide the write access, right click on the folder and click permissions. In the permissions window select the customer’s user name or ‘Everyone’ and give a check mark for full access.
Then install the drivers again.

I hope that helps...

Re: "Fatal Error" installing Officejet Pro L7680 Software, xp

I had the same problem - Possible solution. When I uninstalled - rebooted my machine -hours later that is! - I tried to look at the installation while it was in process. When it got to the connect the usb cable part I minimized the screen and looked at the control panel tosee if I had any new printers installed. Sure enough there was the L7680 installed. I then maximized the installation window and closed it out without completing itany further. It took a few clicks on the x and then I did a control - alt - delete to get rid of the installation at that point. I then rebooted and believe it or not It prints from word and I can send faxes. My scanner is working. I have to do it from within the programs that I open like word etc. but they are working and if I go to test page from the printer icon it prints fine. I have not been able to get the solutions center back u and running and all of the programs that supposedly came with the printer but who needs them. I am just glad to get my $400 investment running. NO THANKS TO HP.

I hope this is a step in the right direction for you. it seems that a print driver installs the minute you hook up to the machine with a usb cable. Of course this all assumes you had it all running once before and are trying to do a re-install of this machine.
