Hi Everyone. Hope you all doing fine.
This is regarding my laptop fan. I just change it and couldn't make it work resulting an overheating laptop that s/d after 5 minutes. JUst bought a new fan and tested it fine. I did check the mb terminal and its giving me a 5V reading but the fan wouldnt turn on once connected and I'm suspecting the sensor but its kinda expensive to replace the mb. I was thinking of getting a supply from the USB (5V) directly to the fan . I did check this set up during post and the fan works. Do you think this is a good idea.?Is there anything that can complicate the issue with this set up?
thanks in advance.

May I ask a few questions?

What is the model and model number of your laptop?

Which fan are you referring to? Most of the laptops I've cracked open have a single heat sink that pulls air in from either the bottom or side and jets it across the CPU and ejecting the hot air out the back (or out the bottom on poor designs).

Hi. It's a compaq presario M2010US. It's the fan that blows directly to the heatsink . Yeah its pulling air from the bottom and blows it directly to the heatsink that is seated on top of the cpu.

Routing from USB is pretty ingenius actually. You are correct in that is supplies 5 volts, but I don't know how constant/clean the power is. I've never heard of this kind of innovation before so I can't comment.

If it were me I know at least one thing I'd try. Try picking up a cooling pad to place underneath the laptop to allow for proper air flow underneath the laptop (that's the down side of having a fan pulling air from or venting out the bottom....the laptop sits on a surface which covers this vent) and also has fans which greatly assist in cooling the laptop.

Well I kinda came up with this set up coz Im really running out of options. And buying a new mb for a three year old laptop (about $100 plus on ebay) is not the way to go. The only drawback that Im seeing right now is that the fan will be continually on and for that reason Im planning to use the speed fan control that I will take out from the laptop cooler. And besides I only use it for browsing and some office application.

I tried that laptop cooling pad but no go. I think USB will give me a good source of constant power and the reason I say this is because when I use the laptop cooler, it is connected to my laptop USB. So its kinda like powering the cooling pad through USB
but in this case the we put the cooling pad inside the laptop in the form of the heatsink fan.

Hope I did not confuse you.
Thanks for the reply.
