I recently did an upgrade to a system, Vista to Win 7 using the easy transfer and now, randomly, notepad keeps popping up. It's not opening a file, it's just a blank dialog box.

Any ideas?

I have already searched for and deleted the desktop.ini files that are located in the startup folders. Desktop.ini was found in the programData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder but not in the same path for the logged in user.

Also, it's happening on 2 brand new laptops that are solely being used for business [read, no erroneous surfing of questionable sites]. The upgrade was from Vista Pro to Win 7 Pro.

One more thing. This is not happening on startup...it's happening randomly while the user is working within windows. No specific pattern either such as the user accessing a certain file or doing a certain process; just randomly opens and sits there.

Hi JCGee,

Did you also check all these locations?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

Delete the desktop.ini files if there and reboot.

Also, go Start and type 'Notepad (no quotes) and right click on 'Notepad' at the top and select 'Properties'. Check that in the 'shortcut' tab, the shortcut Key is set to 'None'
