Hi-
So finally after much time and money, I have a box that runs. The problem is it runs slower than my compaq 200. The processor is an Athlon XP 2000+ on an Elitegroup chipset. I dont know how it is slow, it has 128MB DDR RAM. Did I mention that the Board/RAM/CPU is all new? Also, videocard is an ATI Radeon with 64MB DDR.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out how on earth it could be slow with specs like that. Does anyone have any ideas? Could a power supply with low wattage make my system hang like that?

Maybe its your memory. If you are running XP then 128MB might not be sufficient. 64MB is minimum and 128MB is recomended by Microsoft, but I would go with at least 256MB. I could be wrong, but thats what seems to be the problem to me. XP takes all the memory it can get its hands on.

Also check for programs running in the background and find out what progs are loading at startup.

Thanks for your help.... However-
I installed another 256 mb of ram, so I am up to 384 MB of RAM.... RAM probably isnt the problem since I had that amount in my previous system that had blazing speed.
I didnt mention this, but during the install it would often hang too... In fact, I had to set it to format "quick" so it would even continue on the install. Is it possible that the HD would cause this kind of problem? I have problems opening just about anything off of the hard drive (its a real pain). Also, the PSU is pretty low wattage (like 200 Watts).
What I did notice was that it would kinda work in patterns. Like, the computer would hang for a bit and then do what it needed to do really fast, and then hang again. Just some things I noticed. Thanks in advance.

What OS are you trying to run? I had a huge problem with athalons and XP getting along. Even though microsoft will not admit this, In my personal experience they do not play wellwith each other also athlon xp 2000+ does not nessaceraly mean it is a 2ghz processor, atholon does not really rate thier processor according to mhz, They use some other way to rate them.

The best I can tell you then is good luck I was unable to get xp to work right with my athalon after messing with it for 4 days I took the board and the chip back twice and still could not get it to work after that I said screw it. I bought the pentuim verison of the same mother board and a pentium 4 and everything work just fine from that point on.
