Do you mean you've plugged a 20-pin connector from the PSU into a 24-pin slot on the motherboard?

please help quick I have like 5-10 mins left and this only internet access for the day! Last night I when I built my computer the PSU power connector for mother board power I plugged it in but there was like 4 slots left open dunno why!? it was the case psu so I plug it up and turn it on and it runs then stops and I smell burtness from the PSU Whyyy!???? I bought a new PSU but why didn't that PSU work in the first place? is it because there was slots still open? Should I get a psu that has enough pins to fit the mobo slots?

with most motherboards (but not all) you can get away with using a 20pin motherboard connector but the clincher is knowing which four pins to leave empty how did you figure that out ????
then again it could just be that the unit you tried was too small to run the system you have intended, that too would give the psu unit fits
