Someone gave me a spare external USB adapter. It has 2 ports which connect via 2 5 pin conectors. However, my motherboard seems to have a 9 pin USB connector. is there any way I can make it work? I suspect not.

Thanks

I think you might be able to. Your MB 9-pin connector is in a 10-pin configuration minus 1 pin, like 2 rows of 5 pins. Check your MB manual, but most pin configs are like

pin 1 2 3 4 5

row1 +5v (-) (+) GND NC
row2 +5v (-) (+) GND empty

like RED WHITE GREEN BLACK NONE
