external HDD question

Can I use a single external HDD to run on multiple computers so both of my computers can access stored data within the hdd? If so can someone tell me how I would go about doing this?

unless the computers are networked ... i dont believe a splitter is made for a usb or firewire cable.

hooking the external to computer A and networking computer B with computer A so B can access the hdd from A would be better.
