Buy a Western Digital 7200 RPM drive capable of AtA 133 performance of the size you want

I suggest staying under the 137 gig "glitch" for win xp / you can use drives that are bigger but you will have to do some "bug fixes and bios updates"

you may want to check on ebay / great prices / my only suggestion is buy from a vendor that has a very high sales record and a high positive feedback record
i.e. 2500 sales and a 99.8% rating

specify Western Digital & 7200 RPM when buying

typical external enclosure

Truthfully the difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133 in any currently available IDE drive is too small to measure, performance wise.

There is no "137gig" glitch with XP or any other O/S for external drives, since the software driver is responsible for controlling the drive. I've plugged 200gig USB drives into an old machine that would only handle 32gig max machines internally because of an obsolete BIOS, no problem with the externals.
