Hi a newbie here, i have recently installed windows 7 upgraded from vista and all running well so installed as a full new install and removed vista, now the problem external hd worked fine at first but now when i turn it on it shows in my computer but says it has to be formatted before i can use it, like a fool i did this wiping all my stuff off in the process, re started pc and then ext hd but just keep getting hd must be formatted anyone know the answer please thanks skiddly:idea:

Well if you haven't written to the HD yet, you may have a good chance at recovering your data using r-studio or getdataback. You will need another disk to output the recovered files to. After that, try removing the USB ports in device manager, then reboot and let Win7 reload the drivers.

When you say doesn't recognize, in what way? Is it shown in disk management and not in my computer? Is it identified in Device manager under disk drives? Does it show a safely remove hardware icon? Can you feel the disk spin up?

it does not show in my computer, i can feel it start and hear it but it doesnt seem as fast as when it worked normal, how do i check disc management sorry to be a bit thick lol
