Hi everyone, I bought a Freecom 320gb hard drive a few months back, it's been working fine on multiple computers, including mine (Thought I should mention that I'm running on windows 7 ultimate, on a dell studio 17 laptop). Recently, however, whenever I plug it in, the computer does not detect the thing at all and nothing shows up.

I looked around on some forums, tried to do the "assign a different drive letter" solution, but the drive doesn't show up in the Disk Management tab. Also, when I plug it in, it powers up, the motor in it runs as it always runs, making the same healthy noise and vibrating like it always did, but absolutely nothing happens on the laptop when it's plugged in. I don't get a message saying that something has been plugged into a USB port and it is like nothing is there at all, but power is being sent to it as usual.

I have a feeling that the drive has died somehow... but I'm hoping that it hasn't, since I have some important things I need.

Thanks a bunch and anything will help, even if everyone says its dead, at least I can safely throw it out and not brood over the issue anymore :)

Try Linux knoppix is a live cd and a free tool you can download. You must have another flash drive or hard drive to transfer the data. Bdw it must be empty you may have to format it. Not the one ypu want to recover but the secondary storage device.

I looked that up and it seems to be an external Linux OS, what do I do with it to try to recover my hard drive? When it comes to Linux, it's all Chinese to me. :)

I had the same problem. I have a Iomega external hard drive and it stopped showing up on my computer.

After trying a multitude of solutions I started to despair... Then I hit my hard drive as hard as possible and now it works like a charm again. I don't know if it will work for you but it did for me.

Good luck!
