External Hard drive issues

I have an external hard drive from HP (model number HPBAAD0010HBK-00). Up until recently I was using it to store photos, movies, music etc. It has decided to stop working recently. I run windows seven and after plugging it in to the usb, the computer fails to recognize it exists. the hard drive itself has a flashing blue light under it and makes some noise as it boots up, but it can't be found anywhere in the computer, i.e. as an extra drive, under device manager.
What can I do to make it work, and if I can't make it work, how can I recover my pictures?
I am not the most technologically literate, so please describe any ideas fully, else I will get confused.

Try it on another computer. If it's not recognized there, you'll need a professional data recovery firm to work on it.

If it is recognized, copy the contents to another location IMMEDIATELY.

Then, run a hard drive diagnostic on it to see if it's failing. Try this free program: FWIW - here's a free generic test that runs in Windows (select HDTune, not HDTune Pro): http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
