Yes and that is a common sign of a failing optical drive.
External DVD issues
I have a TDK 840g. I have had trouble with it off and on some some time. Most of the time it would not show up on "my computer". When it did I couldn't access it. Now, I have downloaded new drivers and the such and now it can: Play CD's, Play new release movies (DVD "Inception") I can see files on the disk both CD's and DVD's, it shows up in "my computer" but I can't write to it in any manner with a new CD or DVD. Is it possible that it can view and play all media but not be able to write to it?
