HOLY COW! So I went to boot the PC and it was going fine until a blank desktop showed and it sat there. I could not click on start...NOTHING. So I did the ctrl/alt/dlt and why...don't you know?!?! Freakin' EXPLORER was not responding! I was in a panic. I rebooted like 4 times before it finally went. I went into setup while I was booting to see if I could get it into safemode, but that was not an option on my freakin' setup! ((I don't know WHY, either!)).

Why was this doing this? I had run a cache cleaner that I had run before right before I rebooted and the reason why I did the reboot is because I could not connect to the internet!

Should I like reinstall windows? I am afraid to shut the PC down again!

explorer as u may or may not know is the main part of the os and if it stops responding you dont get a desktop, normally if it locks up on startup you can ctrl-alt-del it and then it wil restart, if not turn the computer off fully and restart this normally soves it.

if that dont work try dunning the system file checker, cant remeber the command, will look it up for you and post it.......

have you added any new hardware wich could be messing around???

depending on what kind of bios you have, you might have an option first to pick what kind of boot you want and then what kind of mode you wanna boot in...like this :

1. boot off the hard disk 2. boot of off network, etc etc,

and then if yo hit F8 or whatever function key gets you the boot options, you get safe mode, safe mode with prompt etc...

if you can get to the dos, try running chkdsk...Im not sure if thats the correct command but it should start a checkdisk...see if you come up with any problems...

I responded to your other thread and the other problem did not sound viral, but this one does. Scan for viri quickly and if explorer.exe is infected and cannot be repaired....... must re format and load win 2k pro he he he he.

A couple of things. First of all, you will not get into Safe Mode by using the setup function, that will put you into the BIOS. To enter Safe Mode, press F8 while booting. Secondly, Dozza mentioned System File Checker. Go to Start/Run and type in SFC and press OK to start System File Checker. Thirdly I agree with the person who believes you have a Virus. Run a virus checker NOW. If you are unable to do that then I'm afraid it is a reformat job. Good Luck...........Dave:smooch:

Very similar Problem

I have a very similar problem - when I boot up I get the desktop with all icons etc, but as soon as I try to click on anything I get "explorer not responding". After much deliberation I decided to re-format the pc, but when I used the system restore floppy, nothing happened. It just gets bypassed, and loads windows, which then has the same eplorer problem as before. Any ideas? I presume it is a virus, but how do I get rid of it seiing as I can't get anything to run?
