Excel locking

While an excel file was open, the system crashed - Win 98 - and now, when we try to open the file it says that it is in use by someone else, which we know it isn't on our small network.

Obviously we can save it by another name and carry on, but I am interested to know if there is a temporary 'lock' file that handles this, which if deleted, would solve the problem.
