error during post: "couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)...

from the bios:

product name: compaq pc
processor type: amd-k6-2
processor speed 533/97 MHz
memory: 256mb
system rom date: 07/25/00
system rom famly: 686s4

i swapped in a different motherboard (from an hp pavilion 8560c) and i can get my pc to boot with video now (at least i got that far), but now i can't install windows because the bios on this older motherboard won't even recognize the cdrom (tried various cdrom drives) and all i keep getting is this error:

couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

in the bios, under "boot order" all that appears is:

floppy drive (a)
hard drive (c)

i'm wondering if i should try to update the bios? i've looked through the very basic bios menu and i can't find a version number or anything, but i can tell by the simple menus that it's pretty old. but i'm not sure where i would find a more recent bios, and how to update it (burn an .iso to a cd, but if i can't get the pc to recognize the cdrom then how do i update the bios?

please help. i'm desperate.

First, just swapping new motherboards cause this type of problem because your WinXP install is for the old motherboard. Just too much of a hardware change.

You MUST do a Repair Reinstall WinXP... (voice of experience)
Do this:
  1. Boot to your WinXP Setup CD
  2. At the 1st window with Repair listed in the bottom Statusbar, select to install (skip this Repair)
  3. Setup should see you have Windows already installed and you'll get a window with a 2nd Repair listed in the bottom Statusbar, use this to start a Recovery Reinstall.
A Recovery, aka Repair, Reinstall will reinstall all the original system files but leave your present configuration and applications as is, including installing updated drivers for a new motherboard.

There MAY be other drivers required for your new motherboard, but these can be installed from the motherboard's CD later (BEFORE Win Updates).

Note, you will have to redo ALL Win Updates. Highly suggest you only install 3 to 5 at a time:
  • De-Select ALL
  • Select the first 3 to 5 updates
  • Download and install
  • IF all install correctly, REBOOT asked to or not
  • Repeat until all updates are installed
You can make this run of Win Updates shorter IF you install SP3 first.

Remember, this place is run by volunteers, no one is paid to help you. Your thread has not even been open for 24 hours, and you have received a reply, then bumped twice yourself (bumping your own thread should only be done once every 24 hours). We don't sit here to wait on you hand and foot, and all support provided is FREE, so please be patient. For someone with nearly 250 posts, it seems like you would know this already.

BIOS updates should only be done if you are experiencing a specific problem that the update is documented to fix. Otherwise you risk turning your PC into a paperweight.

If your BIOS is not recognizing the CD rom drive, then the cables should be checked. Is it on the same IDE channel as the harddrive? Is it set to master or slave? Is the power cord secure? Are you sure the CD drive is not dead?

i understand no one is paid to help me. and it has too been 24 hours. and i didn't get a single response that made any sense. as usual, people don't take the time to carefully read the posts. i specifically said not once but twice that i cannot boot to cd. the only person that replied told me to do a repair reinstall by booting from a windows cd. so...24 hours have gone by and no one has helped me. i'm not asking for my money back, i'm simply stating a fact that i was not helped. you, on the other hand, were able to post your reply telling me to chill out within about 20 minutes of me complaining.

and i have no idea what you mean by "bumping my own thread". i have done nothing but post my original question, then check back a few times to see if anyone replied. don't accuse me of something i didn't do.

i guess i'll just try to find help elsewhere. don't be so defensive.

To bump a thread on an Internet forum is to post a reply to it purely in order to raise the thread's profile. This will typically return it to the top of the list of active threads. Bump is usually an abbreviation for Bring Up My Post
I'm not trying to accuse you, but it annoys me when someone comes in with some sarcastic remark like "thanks everybody for the overwhelming response" because you didn't receive a reply when you wanted. Especially since it appears you are using our free service to help run your new business.

I think I will abstain from replying further, I do not wish to turn this into a flame war. Perhaps someone else will stop by to offer assistance.

oh for pete's sake, let it go. i left your forum over an hour ago, and i'm not planning on returning.

ps - you researched my previous posts? i think i'm starting to understand why nobody had time to help me. i've received more reply's in the last hour than i did in the last 24 hours. look...nobody helped me in 24 hours...i complained about it because i actually really needed help...i'm gone now...let it go...goodbye. good grief!
