Dell Dual Core Vista workstation, valid/activated Vista SP1, Norton 360 v3.0, Office 2007 SBE. Directedly connected to DSL router with internet access, e-mails and internet fully operational. System had AT&T firewall software installed on it in addition to Norton 360, uninstalled all AT&T software. Windows update fails. Cannot connect to windows update server, repeated error code 80070643. Researched error, uninstalled Norton 360, ran Norton removal tool, tried update access, failed. Found issues online with Office OSE, uninstalled Office 2007, ran Office 2007 removal tool afterwards removing all registry entires, tried updates, failed. Found remedies inclusive of stopping services and renameing catroot2 and software distribution folder, restarting services after reregistering dlls, tried update, failed. Downloaded and installed standalone version of Windows update connection manager, installation failed with 80070643 error code. Put me in a round room and tell me to tinkle in the corner. I need help, I've thrown everything I could at this and I'm out of ideas. Hope someone out there can help. I look forward to a reply. Thanks!

Greetings from Paradise, Florida. Thanks for the quick response, but as you'll see in my description, I tried updating as I peeled back each layer of Norton 360, Office 2007, etc. and failed. There was not OSE file in the system when I tried to update, and it failed. No to the Zone Alarm, and No to the spybot. I ran a full system scan with Malwarebytes, Norton 360, and only two questionable programs that i have had NO prior issues with Vista, Registry Mechanic and Ccleaner are installed. That's what has me confounded, I tried all the available remedies and no resolution so far. I'm prepared to back up the data to the external drive and reformat and reinstall if necessary, but that seems drastic. THere's got to be a simpler fix to this.

Hmm, You shouldn't have used Registry Mechanic, it's a registry editor - and sometimes those are bad, but not always. Fact: TSF thinks they're bad

Now, you've gotten ALL your updates from the Microsoft website, right? You haven't downloaded from from download.com or any random site, because if so that could be the cause.

The problem is that I can't get any updates from Microsoft. I have not nor will not think of getting updates from any other location. This fails on updating the Microsoft Update Engine? installation before updates cen begin.

Attached, please find the files you requested.

I also have been in communication with a Microsoft Update tech support analyst, who had me jump through all the hoops I did before, uninstalling Microsoft Office Small Business 2007, removing all evidence of Office in the registry, removing all evidence of office on the hard drive, reboot, and test updates, which failed again.

I also ran windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe, which resulted in an installation error failure using the same damn number 80070643. I also tried running
Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x86.msu and it sat there for over an hour trying to install with no progress.

Hope this gives you something to work with, hope to hear from you soon.
