Hello!
I have an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner that I am trying to use to scan negatives and slides. It works fine in Auto mode, but Auto mode can't scan negatives well. When I go into the Professional Mode and change the Document Type to Film, the Scan button grays out. It will let me do preview scans of the negatives, but not an actual scan. The transparency unit itself is working because it will scan slides in Auto mode. (It will also sort of scan negatives, but it automatically crops them and it usually gets the spaces between the frames wrong. And if it thinks the negatives are black and white, it won't scan them at all in Auto mode (though sometimes it's wrong about whether the negative is black and white or color.)
I've checked the User's Guide, read posts of similar problems on various online forums, and tried calling the Epson help line. I've found several suggestions such as uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and software and disconnecting and reconnecting the scanner. I've tried both. I've also tried reinstalling the software using the original CD that came with the scanner as well as downloading newer versions of the software from the Epson website.
I've also read that the issue might be that the software doesn't recognize that the scanner lid with the transparency unit is plugged into the base of the scanner. The Epson guide suggests disconnecting and reconnecting the cord that runs from the lid to the "Option Port" in the base. But weirdly, there is no Option Port on this scanner--just a wire that connects the lid to the base that cannot be removed. I can't find any evidence online of other V600 Photo scanners being manufactured this way. Also, whenever I see screenshots of the Epson Scan software online, it doesn't match the buttons that appear in Epson Scan on my computer.
Other information that might or might not be of import: The scanner is a few years old. I just started working here a week ago, so I don't know if the Film document type has always been non-functional or if it stopped working at some point. No one at my workplace can ever recall using it to scan negatives or slides before. Our computers use Windows 10, which I've read can be an issue with Epson scanners, but this particular issue doesn't seem to be related to the operating system. I've tried to install the software on both a laptop and a desktop (both Lenovo computers), and it didn't work on either. I am using the original Epson Scan software, not Epson Scan 2 (I can't seem to find a download of Epson Scan 2 for the V600--perhaps they aren't compatible?)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
