I have a MTD lawn tractor with B&S 21 hp engine. It was working fine last week, then when I ewent to start it last night the starter seems to just spin/grind without turning the engine. It is not the clicking sound you get when not enough battery charge. It seems not to engage the engine. Any thoughts on where to start looking for prblem.

Could be the gear on the starter is worn. The gear that engages the
flywheel, I think its called the bendix...Common problem though, hopefully
if that is the problem the gear wont be hard to get to.

it will be the starter clutch/ bendix assy is worn out / damaged
service tech will need model - type code off the engine to get correct parts

just as easy to get starter clutch/ bendix assy just note wether pinion is steel or nylon
or take model type codes off engine and remove starter motor from engine
and have service tech replace starter / bendix assy for you then test off the machine
before fitting back on ( make sure ring gear teeth are all good )
