My device manager is empty (I mean totally blank). Also, sound and internet do not work. Can I do something? I'll probably reinstall windows tomorow. I don't want to, but I don't know what else to do. Thanks. I know its a not virus or malware problem. My hjt log is clean.

Hi cout12

Have you tried using System Restore yet? You'd restore to a date when the Internet, sound, and device manager were working.

It sounds like problematic entries in your Registry. Even if you no longer have any malware present, if you've had to clean any in the past, this may have left damaged entries.

If System Restore isn't an option for you (no restore points go back far enough, for example), try a Registry Cleaner like CCleaner (cnet's download.com has it). Then, if Device manager, sound, and Internet aren't back - you can try removing the kelley's corner fix for Device Manager http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/devicemanagerrestore.reg [that file is from this webpage http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm]. If Device manager then works, remove/reinstall your sound devices from Device Manager. Then try the same for your ethernet device (if your Internet is broadband), followed by a repair install of IE.

If none of this helps, is it a Re-install of Windows XP or a "Recovery Disk" you are considering? If it's a "Recovery Disk" - be sure to follow your vendor's instructions exactly (and unplug from networks, printers, cameras, scanners, memory-card readers, joysticks, etc. - until you're done). If it's a "Reinstallation", have a look at a few guides first, it can help you avoid losing your data unnecessarily http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522 http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Best of luck
. . . Gary
