Thanks for response.

It worked. Problem solved.

I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Basic.
During the install, K-Lite showed that a number of DirectShow filter registry entries were 'broken' and prompted to remove or leave. I removed them.

What could have caused the registry entries to 'break'?
Some registry cleaners can damage cocec filter entries....also many programs will unregister codecs as they install their own versions onto your system.

AHA! That makes sense.

So, possibly TuneUp Utilities 2007's Registry cleaner, which I ran over the weekend could have broken the filter entries?

Could this happen again? Any way to avoid this happening?
Yes...don't use a registry cleaner. They can do far more harm than good if not used correctly :)
