Pardon my utter duh-ness, but so far this's the only place on the internet I readily found discussing this subject monkey.

I'd like to know how to determine what it is, why it's not named, and what could happen if I did find out what it was and named it.

I suppose it's system restore's home, but for some reason, I'd always figured it to be on the D drive.

It's a recovery partition - used by brands like Dell, Compaq etc.
Leave it alone if you think it will be needed in the future.

Thanks for replying, had as mentioned expected that VAIO's and other's recovery programs ('system restore/restore points'?) are customarily at least named so as to tip off users as to those drive's importance.

Can't imagine, the things shouldn't or can't be simply "named" just like other drives.
