i'm having a similar problem, shortly after i reinstalled windows both my cd drive and my dvd drive disappeared. i tried the upper/lower filters, and i tried doing a system restore to a date when they were both working.
no luck... any ideas?

check that you can see them listed correctly in the bios

check the data cable or power plug has not come loose
try a new data cable
until they are seen by the bios they will not be seen anywhere
