is there a way to disable the dvd side of a combo player so that i can use my stand alone dvd recorder instead?

I'm confused about what you want to do/accomplish.
Is the "combo" player a DVD/VHS unit?

No reason to "disable" it. Simply connect the VHS output to the "DVD Recorder" input.
