Alright so I just recently did a fresh install, including a total format of both my hard drives, and since I've been having some problems, but I've isolated it...somewhat. So, to start, here are my specs:

Windows XP Sp2
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1 GB DDR Ram
Memorex DVD-rom(not sure of exact model)

Kind of quick specifications but if you need more let me know. So anyway, my dvd drive shows in My Computer, but it shows simply as "CD drive". It wont autoplay any type of disk I've tried, and it doesn't read it in My Computer. If I try to click on the drive it hangs up for a good long time, then tells me:
" E:\ Is not Accessible. The semaphore timeout period has expired."

I've taken the following steps to diagnose and fix this problem: First of all it's probably important to mention then when the drive is plugged in it takes about 15 minutes for windows to start, from the first loading screen. It takes a normal amount of time when unplugged. I put my windows disk in the drive, and was able to boot off it through DOS, but I cannot run any disks in safe mode. I reinstalled the drive, nothing. System restore, nothing. Couldn't find any drivers or firmware for my drive (the firmware on memorex's website will not install to my drive). I've done extensive "googling" of this problem and it's offered a lot of help but no solution. I insured DMA was enabled, and used some program I heard suggested called Forceaspi, or something to that effect. I used registry first aid and cleaned all that up, and also defragmented both of my totally empty drives. The drive is but a few months old, and I'm at a loss. It worked right after I installed my fresh copy of windows, as I was able to install my board and video card drivers through the drive. So, that's pretty much as extensive as I can get. Sorry if it's too much to read. I really appreciate any suggestions you guys might have for me.

Ok so I found out a bit more. I decided since it was such a fresh install of windows, that it couldn't hurt to just format again. The drive worked until I installed the drivers for my motherboard. This makes me think, maybe, it's more of a problem with my IDE drivers then my actual drive? I don't know if that helps at all but this is as far as I've got.
