DVD-ROM and DVD-RW problem

Hi everyone I am new to this post.

I am having problems with both my drives on an XP Based machine. Both drives were working fine untill I removed a Data CD from the DVD ROM the icon for the cd stayed in my computer after the cd was ejected.

After reboot the icon changed back to the DVD ROM drive but neither drive will auto play for any media and the icon for either drive does not change no matter what media i put in them. However both drives will read all media if I put it in the drive and double click on it a can see the files on the disc.

I have tried to delete both drives from the device manager and unplugged the drives from the computer rebooted and tried again with the same problem.
Then I tried removing both drives from the device manager and unpluging the drives connecting in a standard CD ROM drive and rebooted the computer. The same problem was still there.

To me I think this is more a software problem then a problem with the drives any help would be appreciated.
