I have a dell precision 420. A while back I took a dvd drive out of a compaq and put it in my dell. I have never been able to make it play dvds. I know that I must have a dvd program and have tried several. But do I need a driver for it too? What is the best free dvd software out there and is it supposted to work right after just simply installing the dvd program?:bandit:

The new versions of Windows Media Player will play DVD's, at least they work on my system. Personally, I use PowerDVD, since it came with several of the DVD burners that I have.
If you read my reply, you'll see that WMP, which is standard on every version of Windows, plays DVD's and is free. I only mention PowerDVD because it's a better and more full featured player.
The standard version of windows does not play dvd's. if it does I must have the feature turned off.:bandit:
Go to www.microsoft.com and download the current version of WMP, and I assure you, it will play DVD's. As I said, it's free.
Thats OK but what was the Player you took out of the Compac?
Toshiba ie etc....
You do need the correct drivers for the drive. Of course the DVD part of the could have died. The good part is you still have a cd rom player. Check the jumpers and IDE it should be set as slave to the master. On the SAME CABLE of course.
No POWER DVD is NOT free. It usually comes with a brand NEW DVD-CDRW player as a software bundle package. Check out Blue Star Computer Fairs or search the net for cdrom dvd playrs to get the links to cheap hardware.
