I have a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Windows Vista. It no longer reads most Dvds and it makes a weird grinding noise. Its seems like it keeps trying to download them instead of playing thiem. Plus it says its unable to read them as well. Also, sometimes if I turn it off and then turn it on again with a dvd already inserted, it is able then to play the dvd...There are only a few dvd's that it does with this. It is still able to read music cds. I bank my computer around alot. I do not have internet at home so I am woefully behind on updates

click start/right click my computer/properties/device manager/dvd/cd-rom drive/now right click at the drop down and click properties/now click on dvd region,make sure it is set to the region you live in,if all is ok you could be missing a codec for what ever player your useing,if you d/l VLC MEDIA PLAYER IT WILL PLAY MOST DVD ETC

Stop fiddling with it and replace it. A new one will cost less than the labour necessary to swap it out.
