Has anyone heard the claim that "DVD playback on a game console can ruin the optical drive"? Is this true and what systems does it apply to?

Considering how most games are on DVD discs I say it's bogus.

It's like saying putting crumpets/muffins in your toaster damages it because it isn't bread

The only way I can see them saying that is because with DVD playback the drive is in constant use whereas with (some) games it isn't. I'd consider multiple spin up/down to be far worse than constant spinning.

I agree. A decade with my PS2, many movies watched on it and thousands of hours of gaming and it's still playing perfect.

Basically, the general answer is that this is most likely bull.

Unless you can find some research to the contrary, case closed it seems

I agree. It seems to be far fetched to me. I think it might be true that people who also watch movies on their counsels do wear them out because of the added use, but I couldn't imagine a reason why it would be any worse than games.
