I have a Probook 6560b. Bios just updated to F.61 Rev.A. (sp72496.exe) In hopes this would fix the problem. It didn't.

The problem: DvD drive not found in boot menu in bios. Put in new hdd, ready to install w7, no dvd option.

You can open and close the dvd drive no problem, you can hear the cd spin and load then nothing. When you turn the laptop on with a dvd in the tray you can hear it spin and start during boot, but it does not start auto and again, no option to select it. It's not under device manage either. Not recognized at all. But yet opens, spins and sounds like it wants to start the DVD...***

I feel there is something in the bios that is not resetting that's not letting it communicate since it loads, opens etc.. Feels like some stupid setting is blocking it.

Attempts I have tried? Just about everything.

- Updated bios.
- About 5 different DVD drives from other laptops
- Remove cmos to reset bios.
- Enter bios and reset to defaults.
- Checked to delete upper and lower filters in windows. There were no filters to delete.

I buy from businesses in bulk. So I don't know if there is some kind of security thing enabled to not let me boot.

I have tried legacy and uefi although this bios is so complicated. There is no secure boot to disable or enable that I see and there are all different cd rom or upgrade bay drives to enable to disable in bios EXCEPT there is no disable, everything is change, view or hide.

Which makes me feel like I messed up in a bios setting or have something enabled when it should be disabled and vice versa.

Anyone with this model laptop or bios version that can tell me what to enable to or disable? The original thread for this model is locked and closed.

Sorry for long read.

If you played with BIOS settings and are not sure what you changed or not, simply restore to default settings. As for the ODD it should be enabled by default, but if it isn't, there would be a setting to enable/disable it among other devices such as LAN adapter, Wifi/BT adapter, USB ports, card reader, Mic, webcam etc. If you haven't found such a setting anywhere in the BIOS then it is not meant to be disabled in the BIOS (is permanently enabled). Another setting to look for is one that manipulates individual SATA channels, although I am yet to see such a setting in laptops. If yours has it (I doubt it does), then you'd simply enable any channel that is disabled and see if one of those channels is where your ODD is connected. Some HP laptops call the ODD an "upgrade bay", my HP 620 does, and it had given me a really hard time booting off a disc, although in my case the drive was identified and accessible in Windows. So, when enabling/disabling devices, look for "upgrade bay" and enable it. If all else fails, I believe you have a faulty (hardware) system and your best choice would be to return it. I am yet to see a laptop that had some unconventional way of enabling a disc drive considering how basic it is regardless of whether a model has one or not, even on enterprise machines that employ additional security measures.

I have been messing with it. Starting to think it's the motherboard. I just don't understand how it opens, closes, spins and sounds like it's loading and starting just nothing shows up on the screen. Yes my BIOS has both upgrade bay and cd rom. I have been messing with everything, no luck so far. I just tried disabling everything and I will try one by one to see if anything works. I just left the cmos out the last 2 days and it brought the date back to 1980 when i turned it on so I know it reset but still the same thing. If it wasn't for the fact that it sound like it wants to start and it opens etc I would have given up on it.

It does all that because it is getting power from the board without a problem, but the data link between the drive and the board seems to be faulty. It could be something as simple as a loose solder joint, but you'd never know until you inspect the sata connector. I believe the upgrade bay takes a disc drive or HDD/SDD. If that is empty, you could try installing the disc drive there and see if it works.
