It's likely to be the drive's laser starting to fail, although it could be a plethora of other incurable things, like brands of CDs used or the age of CD-writer used to burn the disc(s) or even the age of the drive used to play the discs.
You could try a CD/DVD lens-cleaner to remove any dust build-up from the laser, but it's not a guaranteed cure.
