My DVD RW drive (NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A) will not read a CD Rom disk. It reads DVDs and (original company issue) audio CDs perfectly. I've tried re-installing the driver, but without results. Yes it's an old unit, but this seems a bit wierd. Aside from savvy, what am I missing? ;)

Hi benro

It's likely to be the drive's laser starting to fail, although it could be a plethora of other incurable things, like brands of CDs used or the age of CD-writer used to burn the disc(s) or even the age of the drive used to play the discs.

You could try a CD/DVD lens-cleaner to remove any dust build-up from the laser, but it's not a guaranteed cure.
