been trying to run a dvd on a xp home system, dvds have run previously, but for some reason now, not working. tried upgrading media player to get the dvd decoder working again but no joy.

anyone any ideas?

the error code i'm getting is C00D1163, there's a crap article on the knowledge base that is telling me to find a decoder, but shouldn't it work in WMP anyways?

there don't seem to be any free decoders on google either :(

cheers

it came with some random dell software, which seems loosely based around the sonic dvd packages.

but it appears to be trying to play a file that isn't on the disc, it says summat about a file ending in "test", and i can't for the life of me find somewhere to change the file it plays.

no windvd or powerdvd or anything. thats what you get for buying a dell computer!

its not my system, but i couldn't find anything when i looked at it. it also isn't too likely to be anything to do with video driver updates, as its running onboard gfx, and is only a couple of months old.

Most Dell's have a CD expressly for the DVD player software, and I think it is usually PowerDVD. Sonic has recently purchased Interactual, so you might find a player in their software package. Anyway, the bottom line is that the codec has either been corrupted or uninstalled. Look at the CDs that came with the system and if you don't find a disc specifically for the player, reload the whole Sonic package. You don't find much in the way of freebies, because manufacturers have to pay royalties on the codec. But, if you have a DVD that uses the older versions of the Interactual Player to deliver extended features such as games, it will most likely install a player and codec when you access said stuff. As a last resort, you can buy a codec package from Sonic.

as per their normal, helpful selves, dell didn't supply any cds that had any kind of software on them ... i think all we could find as MS works. yay.

gonna call them up as it seems a bit rubbish to have to fork out for a codec set when the pc isn't even half a year old.

cheers

You could also download and install the trial version of PowerDVD. It installs the required codecs to play DVDs and that will then allow ANY DVD player (including WMP) to play DVDs. When the trial runs out just leave it installed and the codec will still be working for you.
