Whilst I am burning a DVD project on Nero Startsmart containing video
files .avi and .mpg, (what I'm about to explain can happen at
different times while burning project onto a disc) a message pops up
telling me: "Unable to prepare data for recording; Transcoding of Videos Failed"

I have no idea what has happened, and looked on the projects log file
and it came up with this information:

INFORMATION:
cause: 23 (bad_format)
source: _DVDProcessor
description: Invalid Packets found in VOBU

DumpExceptionInformation(): Caught SEH Exception 0xe06d7363 during
encoding

ERROR:
cause: 128 (nmc_processing_exception)
source: _VOBS::DoGuardedProcessing ()
description: Exception during encoding

I have no idea what this info means!!!
If someone could advise me on what I could do to correct this problem
as it happens everytime I burn a DVD project onto a disc, or tell me
of any free downloadable DVD burning software (free of viruses) that
would help me make my disc I would be very grateful.

Answers ASAP. Thanks for your help in advance

Well, I re-installed Nero and that seems to have done the trick. But I used a DVD-RW disc and it didn't seem to copy onto it as it asked me to "Insert an empty disc" after the Transcoding has finished (but the disc was actually empty) Would it be best to copy video files onto DVD+R and DVD+RW discs??? Because I have had successful completions in the past using these types of discs. It always seems that when I copy onto DVD-RW or DVD-R, it asks me to insert a empty disc.

Reply Soon. Thanks.

yes, whatever disks you find to work with your rom, go for it.
there is no rhyme or reason why certain disks work with certain roms
good luck

I find its somewhat with safer with Nero when using it for transcoding *.avi or .mpeg files to be burnt to disc to have it "burn" them to a Hard Drive first, because quite a few times on a few PC's nero has messed up right at the end just as its about to begin burning the transcoded files onto the DVD, and depending on the file size transcoding can take anywhere up to and over 4hrs - which isnt fun to loose and have to do again. But by burning them to a HDD, they are there for you to burn when ever you want.

As for the not recognising DVD-RW discs, its probly because your DVD Writer drive is designed to use DVD+R/RW discs only, so its never going to work with DVD-R/RW discs - in which case id just stick to using the DVD+ discs
