Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device? Also, if you have access to another PC...it may be an idea to try the optical drive in there to see if the same problem is present.
Hmmm does sound a bit like a damaged drive. Replacing it depends on how much of a budget you have....some people prefer to have 2 separate burners these days whilst some prefer combo ones.
