Today,on start up, my screen went blue and the message came up :
Checking for consistency
NTFS
CHKDSK is verifying files and indexes.

This went on for about three minutes. It said it
was verifying files in three stages.
No idea why. It has never happened before

Could it be connected with a pop up I have recently
contracted saying that I have won a prize in Guildford and Basingstoke,?
I don't live anywhere near either.
The only way I can get rid of that is by Ctrl, Alt, Del.

Hi george,

The Chkdsk feature is just making sure everything is as it should be on your hard drive, seems like somethings triggered it to do that though, have run an anti virus scan on your computer since this popup has started? If you have then it's best to pop over to the virus/trojan/spyware part of the forum because it sounds like adware which can be annoying to get rid of.

It sounds like you may be infected. As StevethePirate has stated. Please click on the Virus/Malware Help link in my signature and try to do as many of those steps as you can and skip those you can't and post in that forum for more help.
