I've run belarc and these are the results if they help (i'm good with reformatting, still learning with other things).

Windows should install the monitor ,it is a standard 17" compac and it has drivers for it (I had one on win 98se).Go to start/settings/control panel/system/device managerand see if there is anything with a yellow"!", if there is open it up and see if it needs drivers reinstalled.

Kodi, I think he might of confused Monitor with video card. Blerc lists his monitor, I actually think Win98 has the drivers for it naitively. Not only that, but he mentioned 'trident' which is a display adapter.

lol he is a she, it was my monitor it was picking up, i gave his hard drive back but i'm heading to his place soon, i'll run blerc again so you know what kind of monitor it is. the hard drive is a pentium 2. win98 might have the driver for it i'll have a look as i only had his hard drive here. if i can't find one for it i'll let you know. i have win98 as an OS as well and i had to find a driver for it with this monitor as it wasn't standard.

it just refuses to accept those files at all, it keeps saying it will stay with current driver which is the standard VGA. i'm pulling my hair out now as i've tried everything to get it to accept the file.

It spat the dummy with both drivers. i right clicked desk top, then clicked settings, advanced, adapter, change, then it comes up with the wizard crap after that.

That's not how you install monitor drivers or video card drivers. What kind of computer does your brother have?

Most times you dont need drivers for the monitor, it will accept any monitor that it is connected to. You do however need the video drivers.
Is it onboard video or an adapter card?

if onboard means the monitor came with the hardrive as standard issue then yep it's onboard. (sorry still a learner but getting to the point of dropping the whole thing from a great height).

it's also complaining about an audio driver, saying the device is not installed. My pc was so easy to reformat i didn't have this problem at all!
