hi all....

i have exactly the same problem as thread starter.
i have both same model WD 80gb, one as master and one as slave.
suddenly my master drive recognized as WD--ROM--SABER in the BIOS.

maybe this because the firmware is somehow damaged?
if yes how can i reflash it?? is it possible?

too many valuable data inside....i cant stand to lose them :(

HELP

check you do not have it set as a cdrom in the bios
of course not.....
it should be WD800JB in the bios.....
i have one Maxtor that turn into Maxtor ATHENA before, it is firmware error.
i fix it with s/ware from SalvationData, but that onli for maxtor

i found a s/ware for this one, but it cost too much, i cant afford :(

The obvious - clear cmos by mobo pins if possible, if not remove cmos battery.

Try to enter the drive's parameters manually in bios setup
its a no-no man, coz if install at diff computer also same result.

im very sure its firmware error, according to this site

DataClinic

my hard disk model is WD800JB

the simptoms :
-The hard disk makes a loud and very distinctive clicking noise.
-drives recognize as WD-ROM-SAbRE

quote from the site

The noise the drive is making in the audio file above is from a severe malfunction where all of the read/write heads are faulty. In some other cases (more common in the lower capacity drives) a similar knocking sound can be heard if the firmware of the drive has encountered problems and is attempting to use the wrong heads for initialisation.
i need the data inside....
all my business and portfolio is too important :(

Slave the HDD onto another computer or another drive (your maxtor). Transfer all the needed data across.

Download UBCD, burn the ISo image to a CD, reboot from CD by choosing this option from tapping F8 at POST (usually) and run your HDD diagnostic scan off there. It seems to be failing clearly, which will be revealed by this scan. Do a thorough scan.

Hi

Have you ran any HDD diagnostic tools yet to see the health of your HDD?

Find your HDD diagnostic make utility from HERE, download whichever format of the utility you prefer and follow the instructions to run it and test your HDD. Firmware repairs are pretty expensive, but at least know if your HDD is worth it or worth binning.

Also have you swapped the cables round?
Did you clear the CMOS and check?
You don't Slave it on another CD/DVD cable do you? If so Slave it on another the Master HDD cable salve connectors.

Let us know how that testing goes.

Why is this a no-no? It's obvious the hard drive's controller (firmware as you call it)is not recognizing the drive's parameters automatically. Entering the parameters manually might work. Quite frankly, you have nothing to lose but 10 minutes of time. if the controller is bad, you don't have many other choices except professional data recovery - software alone won't fix a failing controller

UBCD .ultimatebootcd a bootable cd with "dos" based diagnostic programs on it

have you set the jumpers correctly wd drives are different to other drives
when you fit a second drive the original has to have the jumper added or changed
single master=jumper removed
master with slave=jumper in that position
slave=slave position

yup...scan it with WD Diagnostic tools.....
it told there is cable error sumthing like that which is most unlikely.
yup....swapped cable also....3 cables all same result.
slave?? also done

im pretty sure about the jumper thingy ;)

done that man.....
if auto it detect the size as 40xxxMB....bot 80Gb
i altered manually the CHS, LBA and larger
BUT
still with no improvement :(

i already filled the RMA form, but most likely they will swapped with new drive.
its the data inside that i want :(

If the HDD tool mentions a cable error, you could have connected it up wrongly. Each HDD is different in the way its setup and its normally printed on the front of it how to set the jumpers and the cable arrangements.

thats way unlikely. im 100% its corrrect.
coz its fine b4, after restart, the clicking sound appeared and the whole thingy juzt happened.

of coz i checked the manual printed....err...zillions of times?

im not h/ware noob BTW, attended A+ technician course once, but not finished it.

i dont have idea bout this firmware/hard disk controller though.

tried several diognostics tools too, all negative result.

When you run the tool, it should give you an error code.. right?

It'll also give you an email address to send the error code and find out whats wrong, right?

If it does, follow that and see what WD report back to you. They'll obviously know better.

Well that scan isn't even started and it picks up a cable test error.
You must understand, that even a failed drive will show in this diagnostic.

Your error code is given on WD website as
219: Drive Cable Error: Failure during cable test. The cable is loose, broken, or not plugged in. Recheck your connections and replace the cable. Retest the drive: Re-test
I'd replace that first and then retry. If it isn't do the automatic repair function and see if that helps anything. How long have you had this HDD running well before this?

maybe u missed that i swapped 3 cables b4....all same result.
i had use them about 1 and half year.....

this thing happened when i swapped 10 sticks of ram(QC b4 selling items)
8 sticks passed(boot in into windows) then when i want to check 2 last sticks, wholllaa.....the clicking sounds appear.
im quite sure i did all the ESD and the power is off 1st b4 plug in the ram modules.......

thats how things occured, but i dunno if this all related or not.
i browsed few forums and this case is very small, only managed to find 1 more ppl in this forum faced this problem before,
and he's using 2 WD800JB also, same as me
