Hi, I am new to this forum and hope that you will be able to help solve my problem.

I have spent 3 weeks searching for a solution to the 'SATA primary drive 0 not found' and always come up with the same suggested fixes.None of them have worked for me.

If I was to post everything that I have tried and done to make my computer accept a re-installation of windows XP SP2 on my elderly Dell 8300 computer it would take a very long time to read. Suffice it to say (for the moment) that my hard drive is not being recognized at start-up or in bios.

It is recognized with some bootable disks and I have run many diagnostics which all say that my 2 installed drives which are a 0 RAID array are perfectly healthy. They have been connected to a friends computer and work. All cables have been checked, rechecked and replaced with no good outcome. My MOBO has had all diagnostics run on it and is still in good shape. I have run every tool that I can think of to test every part of my system and as far as I can ascertain my computer and all hardware is still in a good state of health.

The problem started when I (eventually) installed XP SP3 to allow me to install a new program which would not run on SP2. I then realised that some of the older programs that I use would not work with SP3 so I rolled back to SP2. A few weeks later I realised that Norton Internet Security was not downloading new virus definitions or running its weekly scan. I tried doing this manually & failed every time. I contacted Norton & got great help but was told that I really needed to reinstall XP which I tried to do and found the 'drive not recognized' message at startup. I tried to resize the partition to see if that would help but things got worse & I could not boot at all after that.

I ran the Hiren's Boot CD and managed to reformat the drive (several times) with no luck at getting the drive recognizable. I am now using the 'Mini XP' on the Hiren's disk to connect to the internet and send this message.

I know that anybody who may be able to help solve this problem will probably want a lot more information but will wait until I am asked questions before I make this post into a novel...

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, Carl

Booting from the Hiren's CD, copy any files you want off of the drive and save them to a USB HDD.
In the Hiren CD there is a program DBAN Run this on the HDD's This will do a low level format and totally wipe both drives. I would also suggest running the short and long HDD diagnostic program from the Hiren's CD like Seatools. Before attempting to install Windows.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I have already run DBAN and reformatted several times, the last time was through the Windows admin utility with Mini XP. My HD is being recognised from Hiren's and from the bootable Dell diagnostic CD but will not show up in BIOS or be recognised at startup or by the XP (re)installation CD.

BTW... I have a full ghost backup of the drive made before the problem started but my Norton Ghost CD can not restore it as it does not recognize any drive installed :(

It is virtually impossible for a drive to be recognized in software like Hiren's and Dell CD, but not the Bios. If the Bios doesn't recognize a drive, then it is not recognized by disc or drive.
I see you have it in a RAID. Try a single drive, in the Bios change the HDD mode from AHCI to IDE and XP will recognize the drive.

I will try that now & let you know how I get on.

I do not remember seeing AHCI anywhere in the BIOS but will try to change to IDE.

Thanks for your help.

In the Bios the HDD mode may be listed as RAID or AHCI, you want to change it to IDE or Compatibility mode.

BIOS gave these options...

Drive Configuration:-
Diskette Drive A ..... 3.5 inch, 1.44MB
SATA Primary Drive ..... Unknown device
SATA Secondary drive ..... unknown device
Primary Master Drive ..... unknown device
Primary slave drive ..... unknown device
IDE Drive UDMA ..... on

Hard Disk drive sequence:_
1. FT S150 TX
2. System BIOS Boot devices
3. USB device

I could not find anything else that may have let me make the changes you suggested.

Every Bios is different so I can't tell you exactly unless you can tell us the Make and Manufacturer of the Motherboard or computer. In the Bios, look to Peripherals, or Advanced, in there look to HDD mode, SATA or RAID.

Since I last posted I made the mistake of phoning Dell to ask for support.

They guided me through removing 1 drive and restarting my computer. Now I am left with only 1 drive recognizable and a flashing message saying that my Raid array is not working. I have managed to reformat the 1 drive but at startup I still get the message that there is no drive installed.

Dell tried to sell me a new tower (which I declined) and told me that if I need any more help I should employ a local expert to install a new mobo.

I still believe that I can resolve this myself with the help of somebody who has more knowledge than me.

Any further help would be really appreciated, Carl

My system is a Dell 8300
