Dreadful BSOD/Seizing

2194 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Chrisssss
Hi to all tech masters. I will try to follow the posting instructions for BSOD as best I can.

I'll start off first by explaining what happens to my PC. My PC either gets the BSOD (not a BSOD with text, but random sequences of grey boxes of different shapes with a blue background), or it seizes up completely (as in my PC completely freezes and does not simply lag; mouse cannot move as well as no movement in window/taskbar).

This always happens when running Java in a window, sometimes when running regular Macromedia Flash, and sometimes when just streaming videos on the internet. It varies each time for how long it takes to seize/BSOD.

When this happens and I'm caused to reboot, on rare occasions, I will BSOD while windows is starting up, and other times will seize right after I get into my desktop while everything is showing up in my notifications tray. This makes me suspect that running Java/Flash is the catalyst to this problem, but not the problem itself (as if you guys didn't already know that :3)

· OS - Windows 7 Ultimate

· x86 (32-bit)

· am not certain, but will guess the original installed OS is Windows 7 RC pre release build 7100. It is a custom build PC that my Uncle handed down to me. The Windows 7 RC is installed on my C: Drive, while I'm a tool and upgraded to the full release on my D: Drive

· Age of system - System data is showing Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation.

· Age of OS installation - 2009?

· Processor - ADM Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+ 2.41 GHz

· Video Card - ATI Radeon Xpress 1150

· MotherBoard - no clue

· Power Supply - brand & wattage - no clue

If anyone needs any additional information I will be glad to provide it as long as I have proper instructions on how to obtain it. Any and all help or attempts at help is greatly appreciated.

You are very low on physical memory (RAM) - only 447 mB is listed in the SystemInfo report
Win7 requires 1 gB of RAM ( http://windows.microsoft.com/systemrequirements ) in order to operate properly.

38 memory dump files - from 02 to 30 June (almost a month)
Roughly ½ are STOP 0x50 and the other ½ are STOP 0xD1
About 26 have no particular driver blamed, 11 blame the Windows kernel, and one blames athr.sys (your D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)driver)

There are no Win7 drivers offered for your wireless adapter. I would suggest trying the latest Vista version using Compatibility mode to install it. Please follow these steps:
- download the latest Vista 32 bit driver from here: http://www.dlink.com/products/?tab=3&pid=DWL-G520&rev=DWL-G520_revB
- uninstall the current drivers/software that are installed on your system.
- follow these instructions to install in compatibility mode:
Compatibilty Mode Driver Installation:
1 - Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.
2 - Uninstall the current drivers using the Control Panel...Programs and features...Uninstall a program applet. Then verify that the driver/device has been removed in Device Manager
3 - Right click on freshly downloaded driver installation file and select "Properties"
4 - Select the Compatibility tab - and do the following:
- Click on the "Change settings for all users" button
- Click on the box to select "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and then select Windows Vista Service Pack 1
- Click on the box to select "Run as administrator"
- Click on OK to exit all the dialogs
5 - Right click on the driver installation file and select "Run as administrator"
6 - Let it install and see if that stops the BSOD's.
Also, here's an article on adding legacy devices to Win7: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee851685.aspx
I would strongly suggest getting a Win7 compatible device - there's no guarantee that the compatibility mode installation will fix the issues.

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:
How To Find Drivers:
- I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box below. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Here's the older drivers. Please pay particular attention to any dated 2008 or earlier:
Code:
SI3112.sys Fri Mar 21 15:31:45 2008 - Silicon Image driver - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#SI3112.sys
SiWinAcc.sys Thu Jun 14 20:02:27 2007 - Silicon Image driver - comes with package for the SIxxxx drivers - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#SiWinAcc.sys
AtiPcie.sys Mon Oct 30 14:22:24 2006 - ATI PCIE Driver for ATI PCIE chipset - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#AtiPcie.sys
ltmdmnt.sys Wed Mar 08 09:23:07 2006 - Lucent WinModem - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#ltmdmnt.sys
atikmdag.sys Fri Nov 02 00:20:08 2007 - ATI Video driver - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#atikmdag.sys
ANIO.SYS Mon May 05 06:18:54 [COLOR=Red]2003[/COLOR] - [COLOR=Red]REMOVE THIS DRIVER ASAP!!![/COLOR] - unknown driver from Alpha Networks (likely to be a software driver installed with a D-Link device) - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#ANIO.SYS
RTKVHDA.sys Thu Jun 26 23:23:17 2008 - Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver - http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#RTKVHDA.sys
If, after all of this, the problem still isn't fixed - please post back so we can investigate the association with java and other possible issues.

Thank you very much Usasma, I will give your suggestions a shot. Hmm with my low RAM, would it be better for me to seek a copy of Windows XP instead? I will do as you suggest either way in the meantime.
Yes, I'd suggest using XP rather than Win7 - that'll "fix" your issues with low amount of RAM and not having a driver for the wireless.

The copy of Win7 isn't the RC - it's a full version (either OEM or retail - I can't tell which)
I'm having trouble trying to install Windows XP over the existing Windows 7. I'm being told that the setup is blocked because I'm trying to install an earlier version of Windows. I tried formatting my C: Drive where I have Windows 7 build 7100, but am not able to complete a format. I'm working from my Windows 7 build 7600 which is partitioned on my D: Drive.

I've tried installing XP on start up with a CD but that leads me to a BSOD of a different sort.

I think the problem I'm having is due to my C: Drive being my active Primary Partition, while my D: Drive, the one I operate with, is labelled as an Extended Logical Disk.

This is giving me a headache and I will try to instead change my old drivers that was suggested earlier.
Hi -

You have to format HDD completely before XP installation. Use KillDisk.

Thank you for the tip Jcgriff. Ones question though: After I download KillDisk onto a CD, how do I go about using it to format? Do I insert the CD while booting up like I would for my XP Disk?

I guess I have more than 1 question :3
Will using KillDisk wipe both my C: Drive and D: Drive? Or will I have the option to choose which Drive to format?

The reason I'm asking is because this PC is my only gateway to the knowledgeable people of this website and would be sunk if I did something wrong in the process.

If I am able to format one drive, would it be advised to leave my D: Drive as it is, or would it cause problems since it too has Windows 7 installed on it?

Use ImgBurn to burn the KillDisk ISO to CD, then boot-up with it as you would with the XP CD.

You'll select "write image file to disk" - ImgBurn -

KillDisk -

You'll see this screen when you boot. Select "Active KillDisk Free" -

Then you'll see this screen - make partition selection to delete -

I would format the entire HDD. You have Windows 7 RC build 7100, which is expired, on one drive; Windows 7 x86 Ultimate on d: - not sire where XP is at this point. As usasma mentioned, you have ~512 MB RAM (listed as 447 MB), which is not enough to run Windows 7. Also, all of your device drivers are outdated; there may be no Windows 7 updates for a system of that age. Your BIOS date = 2005.

The problems you were having were probably caused by lack of RAM (excessive paging activity occurring - system using virtual memory (HDD - page file) because it ran out of RAM.

I also agree - stay with XP on that system. Experience Windows 7 on a new(er) system when you get one.

Run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor --> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

Thank you for the tips. I'm just looking for a temp fix until I save up enough for a nice $999.99 tower that I've had my eye on at Future Shop >:]
