Closing DOS Application under Windows XP

I am running a DOS application under Windows XP on 2 computers. This is (was) a commercial application that I have run since 1985 before there was Windows and have run it on most versions of Windows since.

Normally when you click on the X to close or shutdown Windows while this app is running, you'll get a prompt that "Windows cannot end this program ..." and you can either click End Now to force close or Cancel to go back and continue or close the app normally.

On one of my two computers for perhaps a year now, clicking the X or shutting down Windows does not prompt as above but simply disappears the application.

I want to know what I changed or what has changed in Windows on the one computer and what I can change to get back to getting the prompt.

This won't help you directly, but normally you should exit the application from within itself, not by terminating it that way. Relying on "windows cannot end this program" isn't good, because that way of ending the program is considered an abnormal termination.

Thanks, but I am fully aware of what you say. The point is that sometimes one accidentally clicks on the wrong X trying to close something else or mistakenly tries to shutdown Windows with the DOS app running, so that is why it is important to get the "Windows cannot end ..." message. Since I no longer get it, I want to know how to get it back.
