Don't know if this is a virus or not

1370 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  MicroBell
Greetings guys -

Not sure if this behavior is due to a virus or a redirect. My wifes laptop is an emachines running windows xp. Anyways over the past few days we have found that we cannot go to google nor view our hotmail accounts. When we go to google we don't get redirected but we just hang. The bottom of the browser window says opening page http://www.google.com but it never gets there. We can get to hotmail but when we type in our username and password the browser has similar behavior. At the bottom of the browser is says opening page http://www.hotmail. (lots of other stuff on the pathname) and then it says connecting to site 64.4.32.7. Then it timesout and says cannot find server...

I suspect there is some sort of redirect going on but I am just a novice...

Attached is my hijackthis logfile.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

Thanks for the instructions. I performed them as you instructed and both spyware and trend micro found stuff. Unfortunately after each reboot the trend micro icon disappeared but there was no log file in it's place. Just a blank spot in my desktop where the icon used to be. Please note I have system restore OFF. Should I turn on system restore in order to get the log file created?
You should turn it on. Won't get you the log though I don't think. Anyway..lets try 2 other scanners....

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Standard
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post both those.

*Note* While we are at it..lets also re-register IE's DLL's

Try this - with all browser windows closed, Go to Start->Run and copy and paste each of the following, hitting ok after each:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Reboot, then try to access the sites that were giving you problems again.

Frustrated... Still cannot get to google... I can get to hotmail but cannot log in to hotmail.
Sounds like an IE issue...and not malware related. Did you try to register those DLL's again as I listed above? Give me the following log so I can have a peek at your hosts file...

Download: StartDreck

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'Mark All'

UN-Check the 'NT-Services & NT-Kernel...' boxes only:
Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread..
