Hello, during recent power outage my VoIP service obviously went down. I was wondering if I could save the VoIP at the next power outage if I were to have a backup power generator or does it rely on other services that also goes down at a power outage?

Thanks!

So if I keep my cable modem and phone powered by a backup generator then I'll be good?

Do the cable companies run on backup power? ...in my case, Time Warner? If not, am I screwed even if I have a backup generator?

Thanks!

It will depend on your specific ISP and how their network is configured. Around here, Comcast has small gateway boxes on poles that are powered from the local power, so an area-wide power outage will also knock them out. I have Verizon FiOS, and my fiber link goes directly to the Telco CO, which has a standby generator, so if I keep my FiOS box powered, I have Internet and VoIP phone service.
