I have a Ustarcom WA3002G4 modem and I recently bought a 5 meter long ethernet wire and now the internet is shared between a desktop and laptop. For the desktop I have used a 1 meter wire from modem and 5meter wire for laptop. My question is Does the length of ethernet wire actually matter with respect to the speed ? Does it lower the speed to a small extent ?

The regular speed is around 30-40 kbps ! :laugh:

Length does matter but not at the lengths you listed. Cat5e ethernet cable can go as long as 100m. Anymore than that you would start to see a signal loss.

Well I know its not due to cable length that its that low. I assume you're paying for higher bandwidth though right?

I would try replacing the cables first

Is it the same for both the PC and the laptop?
Switch the cables between the two and recheck both, if the longer cable is slower on both I would suspect a bad cable.
