Whenever i turn on my computer,i get a message..

hole has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I check for more info and find this...
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Does anyone have any idea what all of this means? If you need more info then i'll get it for you.

Thanks!

P.s. I have XP Home.

Hi, Gary,

I don't run XP, but I took the time to do a little homework. This "WER1.tmp.dir00" is associated with a lot of different problems!

What we need to know is:

1. Are you running an antivirus product, and which one?

2. Are you running any antispyware programs (e.g. Adaware), and which one.

We'll need to take this step-by-step, as first thought is a virus, second thought is a problem with an XP update, and the third thought is a conflict with Yahoo software (if you have any).

Let's start with step one.

One of the major differences between NAV 2002 and 2003 is the ability to detect some "trojans". So, I would first recommend that you go to SARC and do an on-line virus scan.

I am assuming that you have updated your Norton and Adaware, and have scanned with both. There have been several times when, to solve a pesky problem, I have also needed Spybot S&D. I now have and run both, and each will find things that the other does not. You can download Spybot at the link below.

This appcompat.txt problem is apparently not just "bad bug" related, but can have something to do with refresh rates in XP and W2K; check out this site and see if it might help you:

If your problem is not solved, I would recommend that you download a free tool called Hijack This. The URL I will give you is to a Quick Start site, which will explain the software. Download it, close all browser windows, scan and copy and paste the log here. Please don't try to fix anything yourself at this time, unless you want to spend some time getting "ip to speed" with this tool. Just post the log, and we'll have a look at it.

Let us know how you are doing, one way or another. Good luck!
