I have always bought internet security packages as I do online shopping. This is starting to get expensive and therefore I want a free one. All the free security packages seem to be anti-virus programs and not internet security programs. Do these anti-virus programs protect me during online banking/surfing? Which is the best to get - I have already read the sticky.

You're a bit confused here. AntiVirus's are just security programs usually with the assumption of a realtime scanner for computer protection, what they do depends on the AV and the version of the AV you get. Some have paid and free versions that limit functionality from realtime scanning to firewalls. Some have firewalls, other's don't.

For online banking, I don't think they really protect you as much as just monitoring the traffic to and from your comuter ports. Really almost always for online banking security, it's just common sense. I don't use my WiFi for online banking, I use my own home network ethernet, and I don't use chrome for that either. It's usually Firefox.

You still need to protect yourself from phising sites, and attempts, which are most common through email. Some AV's can make you aware of it, as well as your email client, but too many people rely soulfully upon the AV itself like it's some kind of superhero. Which is not the case.

No matter what you do, there's still potential of viruses and intruders, regardless of what AV you have installed.

Then why do some companies make anti-virus programs and internet security programs too? What is the difference?
I think you misinterpretted my post, but i'll try to help you out with that.

Antivirus is just a program, Internet security can become a part of an Antivirus program. There's no real difference between the two.

Cheers :)

I got zenok free antivirus on grandma's computer and she is having no problems with it.
I use Zenok with Comodo firewall and really like. This I have been using for years with both paid and free versions.
I think both would be a good choice..I have also used the free version of Kerio and it seemed good.

Hi:

Spywareblaster and Spywareguard are considered anti spyware. Also I would have Superantispyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on hand for on demand scanners.

I use all the above.

Always check for updates/keep them current.

So the advantage of paid packages is that the features of multiple programs can be kept within one program?

Does installing an antivirus, one of them anti spywares, mbam and a firewall do pretty much the same as the paid packages? but do they interfere with each other at all?

also, is mbam free? i have it at the moment but it says my trial runs out in 10 days.

Since you have an ongoing malware removal topic, please hold off on making any system changes other than those requested by your helper.

Thank you.

There is a 14 day trial of the PRO features. At trial end, you have a choice to purchase a lifetime license, or revert to the free, on demand scanner.
