Hi, I can't seem to get my DNS on my laptop working, is there a public server that i can use? I've been using the automatic setting, but its not working and I'm trying to isolate the problem by seeing if switching the DNS will help or not. are there any lists of public proxy servers? thanks for the help

you should ask your internet service provider for the ip addresses for their regional dns servers then if you are using win xp you can go to network connections in your control panel then right click on your local area connection and select properties look for internet protocol/tcp/ip and double click it look for the option to use the following dns servers and type in the ip addresses your isp gave you and click on ok twice if you go to a dos prompt and try to ping a domain name like yahoo.com and you get an error like cannot find host then that may be an indication that you need to hardcode your dns servers to you nic

If you're connected to a router, are all the machines connected failing to obtain a DNS address?
