Suddenly all of my microsoft programs are not working. I have tried to reinstall microsoft office and some others and it says "The MSIEXEC.EXE file is linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222" Actually there are a few other types of programs that have ceases to operate, like my scanner, too.

I have tried to do a system restore, but those seem to be gone also. It says that I have never created any restore dates. I did one just last week but it is gone. I have not done anything out of the ordinary...things just went wacky.

What happened to this DLL file in the first place?
And how do I go about getting another one?

Many Thanks

The error "Missing MSIEXEC.EXE file is linked to missing export
MSI.DLL.222" is due to a old version of the file in the system or due to file corruption.

To resolve this issue you will have to extract the following files:

1. msiexec.exe
2. msi.dll
3. msihnd.dll

I've inserted the specific directions below, on how to extract files in Windows ME.

If they don't work, let me know and we'll try some other steps.

Extracting System Files in Windows ME:

In order to extract missing files in Windows ME,
perform the following steps:

1. Click Start, Run, and then type MSconfig.
2. Click OK and then click "Extract File".
3. Type the file name you want to extract.(the files listed above one at a time)
4. In the 'Restore From' field, type C:\Windows\Options\CABS.
5. In the 'Save To' path, type C:\Windows\System.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Ok to backup option.

This will extract the file successfully into C:\Windows\System folder.

And hopefully this will correct the problem. :) As for your restore date being gone I'm not to sure on that one, I found Window Me to be an unbelievable headache and scraped it as soon as possible so I'm not that familiar with its ins and outs.

Let me know if this helps at all. oh, and welcome to the board :)

OK, so I went in and tried to run the programs. I got an error messge that said they were not installed. So I tried to reinstall everything. I kept getting the same message.

I went back and UNinstalled everything, then reinstalled. Still I am getting error messages that the programs are not there.

I went into the C drive and sure enough, they are not there. Even though they are on my start menu, the folders are empty.

Why won't they install?? Everything goes ok during the installatin process...

ok, lets see, I have MS Office 2000(2 disc) and MS Frontpage 98 and the 2000 update, and MS Money 2000.

After completely uninstalling them all using my control panel, I started from scratch. I popped those puppies in and ran a FULL install from the start. I did NOT do custom install or pick only certain apps.

When that did not work and I tried to install them again but I just let the cds try to "repair" them. That did not work.

So I uninstalled them using that option from the cd. Then I started all over again installing.

Back and forth, back and forth. uninstall, install, uninstall, install...

Actually Money did install ok, but the others did not. And what ever you had me do with the "extracting" at least got me to be able to run the cds! I couldn't even get that far yesterday.

And just another quick ?? If Windows ME is not very good, what other version is better. I certainly have no problem with upgrading that.

Thanks

If your strictly business you could go Win2k, but I would recommend XP because its (in my opinion) Microsoft's best OS since NT. It has the stability of the NT series OS's and it can play the latest games to market. Has file security and my copy hasn't blue screened me once. If you've got a NT or Win2000 Server and want domain management get XP Pro, if its just your system or a couple others connected PtP then save your money and just get XP Home.

Ok, back to the problem at hand, :)

Go back through the system and uninstall Office from the system..again, download this program and run it, it will remove any lingering Registry entry's that the uninstall didn't catch, then reboot and re-install...with any luck it should work. :D

hhmmnn...I did not know that about the update for system restore...I guess I can get it at microsoft.com? Too late though.

I got so frustrated last night I used the recovery cds. I did not format the hard drive though, just did the software recovery.

Even after all of that, I still cannot install any of the microsoft stuff. No matter what I do. I would love to back up ALL of my stuff and format, but I am terrified of doing that. I think that is too drastic. There has to be a better solution, but nothing seems to work.
