Go into the folder where you opened the dll. Hit alt, a bar should appear. Now hit tools->folder options. View tab, uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"

Now rename the file _____.txt to ______.dll.

Or

Open the file in notepad and save it as ____.dll

Oh, you're asking a different question then. What you did was associate .dll files with notepad. That means, if you double click on a .dll file in Windows Explorer, it will open with Notepad. That doesn't actually change the way the file acts. .dll files are files that are part of programs, when a program needs it, Firefox for example, it will use it. You don't need to worry about associations.
