Display going blank and coming back

732 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  dai
Having problem with display, just started yesterday and have made no recent changes to system leading up to this issue. Computer is a Dell Dimension 4600. Running XP Pro, Service pack 2. Display is a Dell 1800FP. Video card is NVIDIA GeForce FX5200. Display is frequently and somewhat randomly blinking out and then coming back within a couple seconds. Occasionally seems to be correlated to mouse use, but other times not. Happening while using different programs (IE, Outlook, Windows, Quicken, while typing this forum post). Need advice on where and how to start looking for cause. Video board? PC power supply? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

what does the bios list your voltages as
I don't know how to check voltages in bios, so need some guidance there.

In meantime, I decided to try updating the NVIDIA driver. Step 1 was to remove old NVIDIA driver. The display blinking problem was not seen immediately after removing driver and rebooting. But after Step 2 where I downloaded new driver and rebooted, problem came back.

Basic dumb question... when the NVIDIA driver is removed, what is driving the display? I'm guessing there is some default driver circuitry on motherboard that is unrelated to NVIDIA card. Video quality is not as good, but problem is gone. If indeed the NVIDIA card is not being exercised when I run without the NVIDIA driver, I'm starting to think I might have a problem with the NVIDIA card. If so, at least it would be easy solution to just replace the card.

in the device manager uninstall the card
reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode
when windows finishes rebooting
disable a/virus
install your drivers
reboot the computerthe board may not have sensors see if this gives you anything
