alright, i have had my DMA disabled for a long long time, and now that i decided to re-enable it, it refuses to enable.

i tried enabling them one at a time, and all in the same shot.

i have read about 2 dozen pages about it, and they all say its as easy as enabling it.

yet when i enable it, it restarts and it is disabled again.

nothing i do makes any difference.

i have two hard disks on one channel, and two cd-roms on the other channel.

none of them are allowing it.

in the past i could do it.

i dont know what i am doing wrong here.

can someone help?

FWIW, I have a couple of systems here that will drop out of DMA mode if the drives spin down in standby. To get them back into DMA mode, I had to do the following dance:

- Set both channels in Device Manager to PIO only.
- Reboot and enter BIOS and disable UDMA on all channels.
- Continue the boot and set both channels in Device Manager to DMA if available.
- Reboot and enter BIOS and enable UDMA on all channels.
- Continue the boot. The drives should now be in DMA mode.

It may not fix yours, but I got the technique from a newsgroup when I was looking for how to get mine running. When I tried this, it fixed the issue, so I now pass it on.

You've got Windows 98? This is easy:

Enable the viewing of hidden folders
Go to C:\Windows\INF (which is a hidden folder)
Open your mshdc.inf file in notepad
Look for the entry [ESDI_AddReg]
Make sure these lines are listed under that:
HKR,,DriverDesc,,"ESDI Port Driver"
HKR,,DevLoader,,*IOS
HKR,,PortDriver,,ESDI_506.pdr
HKR,,IDEDMADrive0,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive1,3,01

I assume you have the latest drivers for your IDE controller.
